How
to Connect your Playstation 3 to your Entertainment
System |
| |
| The PlayStation 3 can be connected to your entertainment
system using the standard component, S-Video and HDMI
cables. Each cable transfers data between your PlayStation
and your entertainment system at different rates and therefore
affects the quality of the audio and video that is displayed.
The media quality that is displayed is also dependent
on the quality of your television and/or media system.
In most cases, the media quality displayed is as good
as the oldest piece of technology the data is being passed
through. |
| |
| Component cables are the standard yellow, white and
red cables that hook directly up to your television. They
offer basic video quality and stereo sound. The reason
the quality is lower with these types of cables is that
the data is only being passed through one connection for
video and two for audio. Almost all televisions and media
devices support component cables. |
| |
| S-Video cables transfer video data through four pin
connections. This cable gives the video two main lines
of transfer with the other two being reserved as grounds
for the main lines. S-Video cable comes standard on many
DVD players and receivers but is starting to be phased
out as a legacy device. S-Video cable is slightly better
then the single line component cable. |
| |
| HDMI cables support the most efficient and transfer
capabilities of all the cables. HDMI stands for High Definition
Multimedia Interface. All versions of HDMI cables support
high definition video and audio but the most current version
(1.3) supports, deep color, Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master.
Deep color extends the color palette of the video data
which increases the colors available to display. This
will only affect entertainment systems that can support
deep color. Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master are two new
standards for audio and few receivers are available that
can support them. Both standards are near master quality
sound. |
| |
| Some media devices do not have HDMI connectors but there
is still hope for High Definition. If the device supports
a DVI connection then HDMI to DVI cables can be used.
DVI stands for Digital Visual Interface and will transfer
the data at high definition rates. |
| |
| If you are not satisfied with the graphic quality of
your PlayStation, try upgrading your cables. In many cases,
the cables are the weakest point in the transfer of media
data and will decrease the quality being received. |
